Top 10 Osheaga Essentials

Annnddd we’re back for another year of music festivities! For all you Montrealer’s, we’re sure you know all about what’s happening this weekend… the annual Osheaga music festival at Parc Jean-Drapeau. This year, like every other year, tickets went in a flash and we understand why! For all you Red Hot Chili Pepper, Lana Del Ray, and house music fans, I’m sure you’re just as ready to quick off this music festival in high gear! As much fun as music festivals are from being outside during in the sun, to eating good food, and drinking all afternoon we know that they can also be exhausting and a little unsanitary to say the least. SO given that Osheaga starts this afternoon, we figured we would give you a little list and pointers to consider buying or using to make your music festival experience a little bit more enjoyable!

#1 A Fanny Pack

Girls this one is an absolute must! Because you will be doing a lot of walking around and sliding up against strangers in a crowd, it’s important to keep your belonging close to you. That being said, you don’t want to be walking around with large purses nor have annoying straps get into your way. Fanny packs are essential because you can be hands free while having all your products close by! You can find simple or more fashion forward bags anywhere from Forever21, American Apparel, American Eagle, Urban Outfitters etc.

#2 A Pair Of Sunglasses

Besides the fact that sunglasses are the perfect accessory to add some color or edge to your outfit, you’re also going to need these to block out the sun while getting a good view of who’s performing on stage. Recently I have discovered that sunglasses have become a big trend, so fortunately many stores are creating knock off looks of higher brands. If you’re looking for a cute pair for under $30 go to Aldo, Zara, H&M and Forever21.

#3 A Hat

A hat is also another great accessory that you happen to see a lot of at music festivals like Osheaga. It’s the perfect way to make any outfit have a more boho and festival vibe to it, however, it’s also great to give you some shade and protect you from being in the sun all day! For cute hat recommendations I would stop by Forever21, Aldo and American Eagle.

#4 Running Shoes

Although dressing in style is always important so is comfort. Especially when you’re going to be on your feet all day! Thankfully running shoes have made their way to the top of fashionable footwear. Screw the cute booties and sandals, throw on a pair of running shoes with your jean shorts or summer dresses so you can actually last the whole day and night dancing.

#5 A Portable Charger

This is a genius idea. We know you’ll be snapping pictures and taking Snapchats the entire weekend, which drains your battery in two seconds. And, considering you’ll be in a park theres not going to be any outlets, which is why this charge comes in handy! You can purchase one of these at Editorial boutique on Stanley as any Apple store and most electronic stores.

#6 Pocket Pack Kleenex

You’re going to be thanking us for this one later! After waiting in line to use the bathroom, there’s nothing worse than discovering theres no toilet paper left! So here you go! Your very own supplies.

#7 Blotting Papers

These are genius. These Cool Mint Blotting Papers are $10 from Sephora and will save your life. After standing in the blistering heat and sweating, just take one of these wipes to clear your skin and refresh your face with their mint flavouring!

#8 Mini Deodorant

This travel size deodorant is perfect to fit into your small purse and comes in handy after sweating and rubbing up against everybody in the crowds! You don’t want to forget to throw that in your purse on your way out!

#9 Reusable Water Bottles

These water “bottles” (more like bags) are amazing! If you don’t want to waste $8 on a water bottle then just bring one of these and clip them onto the strap or band of your purse! They’re light and the perfect thing to have nearby so you don’t get dehydrated.

#10 A Card Holder

Leave your big chunky wallet at home and grab yourself this $7 cardholder from Forever21! You can put your bills in a pocket in your fanny pack and leave your ID and credit cards in this perfectly thin sized wallet!

We hope you have the best time at this years Osheaga music festival and hope you found this tips helpful in making your experience the most enjoyable!

10 Summer Reads

What better way to spend a day at the beach, a day at the pool or a day at the park than with a good book by your side? And hey, the great thing about books? They’re even perfect for those rainy summer days.

#1 The girls by Emma Cline

When lonely teenager Evie Boyd sees a group of girls in the park, she’s immediately taken by their charms – their sense of freedom, their sense of abandon. She catches the attention of one of the older girls and soon finds herself drawn into a cult and the lure of its seductive leader.

“On the surface, it’s about a girl caught in the web of a Manson-like California cult, her loss of innocence, and how an average person can become complicit in that kind of insanity. But more than that, it’s about the feminine gaze – women watching each other, watching others watch them, and wanting to be really seen.”

#2 In Twenty Years by Allison Winn Scotch

When five Penn students return to the house they shared almost 20 years before, old grudges return, unrequited feelings bubble to the surface, and long-buried secrets are exposed. “In Twenty Years is a novel about the dreams we had when we were younger, how our lives change over time, and what we choose to do with our futures.”

#3 The Sweetheart Deal by Polly Dugan

Leo has long joked that, in the event of his death, he wants his best friend Garrett, a lifelong bachelor, to marry his wife, Audrey. One drunken night, he goes so far as to make Garrett promise to do so. Then, twelve years later, Leo, a veteran firefighter, dies in a skiing accident. As Audrey navigates her new role as widow and single parent, Garrett quits his job in Boston and buys a one-way ticket out west. Before long, Audrey’s feelings for Garrett become more than platonic, and Garrett finds himself falling for Audrey, her boys, and their life together in Portland. When Audrey finds out about the drunken pact from years ago, though, the harmless promise that brought Garrett into her world becomes the obstacle to his remaining in it.

“A charming, poignant novel of dealing with grief and finding love again, this is the perfect light-hearted page-turner for the shore.”

#4 We were liars by e. Lockhart

The Fault in Our Stars author John Green calls We Were Liars by E. Lockhart “thrilling, beautiful, and blisteringly smart.”

“In it, A beautiful and distinguished family.

A private island.

A brilliant, damaged girl; a passionate, political boy.

A group of four friends—the Liars—whose friendship turns destructive.

A revolution. An accident. A secret.

Lies upon lies.

True love.

The truth.”

#5 Me Before You by Jojo Moyes

Lou Clark knows lots of things. She knows how many footsteps there are between the bus stop and home. She knows she likes working in The Buttered Bun tea shop and she knows she might not love her boyfriend Patrick. What Lou doesn’t know is she’s about to lose her job or that knowing what’s coming is what keeps her sane. Will Traynor knows his motorcycle accident took away his desire to live. He knows everything feels very small and rather joyless now and he knows exactly how he’s going to put a stop to that. What Will doesn’t know is that Lou is about to burst into his world in a riot of color. And neither of them knows they’re going to change the other for all time.

#6 Home going by Yaa Gyasi

The novel follows two Ghanaian half-sisters. One, Effia, marries a Brit and lives in luxury at the Cape Coast Castle. Unbeknownst to her, her sister, Esi, is held as a slave in the dungeons below Effia’s feet. The book chronicles the split in their lives and in the paths of their descendants. Relaxing Sunday read? Maybe not. But this is a powerful book people will be talking about for the rest of the year.

#7 Rich and Pretty by Rumaan Alam

Two women who’ve been BFFs for 20 years find their lives diverging and their conversations becoming increasingly difficult (and easy to avoid) when Sarah (rich, waspy) asks Lauren (pretty, living the bohemian life in Brooklyn) to be the maid of honor at her wedding.

#8 The Opposite of Loneliness by Marina Keegan

Marina Keegan’s The Opposite of Loneliness: Essays and Stories is a posthumous collection written by a 2012 Yale student who had a play set to be produced and a job waiting for her at the New Yorker when she died tragically in a car crash with her boyfriend days after graduation. Following the viral success of her final essay for the Yale Daily News, “The Opposite of Loneliness,” her essays and stories have been gathered into a collection by one of her teachers.

#9 Something Borrowed by Emily Griffin

“Something Borrowed tells the story of Rachel, a young attorney living and working in Manhattan. Rachel has always been the consummate good girl—until her thirtieth birthday, when her best friend, Darcy, throws her a party. That night, after too many drinks, Rachel ends up in bed with Darcy’s fiancé. Although she wakes up determined to put the one-night fling behind her, Rachel is horrified to discover that she has genuine feelings for the one guy she should run from. As the September wedding date nears, Rachel knows she has to make a choice. In doing so, she discovers that the lines between right and wrong can be blurry, endings aren’t always neat, and sometimes you have to risk all to win true happiness.”

#10 Beautiful Ruins by Jesse Walter

The story begins in 1962. On a rocky patch of the sun-drenched Italian coastline, a young innkeeper, chest-deep in daydreams, looks out over the incandescent waters of the Ligurian Sea and spies an apparition: a tall, thin woman, a vision in white, approaching him on a boat. She is an actress, he soon learns, an American starlet, and she is dying. And the story begins again today, half a world away, when an elderly Italian man shows up on a movie studio’s back lot—searching for the mysterious woman he last saw at his hotel decades earlier.

“It’s the story of an almost-love affair that begins on the Italian coast in 1962…and is rekindled in Hollywood fifty years later.”

Since day one of the birth of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg’s main aspiration behind his ingenious website was that of connectivity. The idea of bringing friends, family and lives together across vast distances through the power of technology. By using the Web as his base, he has managed to create a platform where geographic boundaries do not exist as a constraint and through that, has created one of the largest successes worldwide.

CX Deck
This past week, Zuckerberg as well as Facebook’s vice president of engineering Jay Parikh, celebrated another huge milestone in their career. Not far from the Mexican border, Facebook’s team brought their success to new heights, literally. In the very early morning they launched their very first flying drone named Aquila. This flying drone was designed as part of Facebook’s plan to connect people all over the world to the Web. According to Facebook’s estimates, “about 1.6 billion people live in areas of the world that don’t offer mobile broadband”.

The Aquila drone is made out of carbon fibre and is powered by the energy that comes from the sun, allowing it to function for longer hours. This drone is not the first of it’s kind nor did it break any records with its flight. Google has their very own as well and  with time who knows what these two powerful minds can create together.

This piece of technology is another huge milestone in the success story of Facebook and its company. They continue to strive to connect our world on a global scale and use the ever increasing designs and power of technology to make that happen!

Dreams Loves Summer Cocktails

With the recent heat wave we’ve been experiencing here in Montreal, it’s safe to say we all need to stay indoors or find some summer refreshments to cool us down. That being said, we’ve created a list of our top three favorite summer cocktails that are perfect for any summer event or party.

After a long grey and white winter, Summer is the season to introduce color and brightness back into your life and that includes your diet as well. These three summer cocktails are anything short of bright, colorful and refreshing!

Cocktail #1: The Paloma Cocktail

When you’re walking outside on a hot summer’s day in the intense humidity and you’re in desperate need of something to quench your thirst, what is one of the first things you think of? For me, it’s lemonade. This Paloma cocktail is the perfect version of an “adult” lemonade. Besides for the beautiful baby pink color this cocktail has to offer, it is the perfect balance between sweetness and tartness.

  • 2 oz. tequila
  • 3 oz. citrus sparkling water
  • 3 oz. grapefruit juice
  • 5 Tbsp. simple syrup
  • Juice of ½ lime
  • Ice

  • Combine all liquid ingredients in a glass
  • Mix well
  • Add ice
  • Drink & enjoy

Cocktail #2: Watermelon Frosé

What is a frosé you ask? Well that’s a great question! This term is a combination of two of our favorite things… the first is rosé and the second one is frozen. If you’re a wine drinker like we are then you have to admit rosé is the best, for it’s pink and ideally the iconic symbol of summer! Now this recipe is totally amazing because it’s practically a fruity smoothie with just a hint of alcohol. Whip it up in your blender and poor it into a thermos on your way to the office and no one will ask a single question!

  • 1 cup of frozen seedless watermelon cubes
  • 12 ounces of rosé (1/2 a bottle)
  • 1/4 cup of raw sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon of salt

  • In a blender, put in all ingredients!
  • Pulse the blender a few times
  • Let the blender run for a few minutes to break down watermelon
  • Poor, serve & enjoy!

Cocktail #3: Frozen Pineapple Mango Daiquiri

Couldn’t find the time this summer to escape to an all-inclusive? Don’t worry, we’re bringing the beach and drinks right to your backyard! With this fruity, smooth, cold and not so sweet cocktail, just sip away and let these flavors transport you to the islands!

  • 4 ounces white rum
  • 2 ounces fresh squeezed lime juice
  • 1 cup fresh pineapple, cubed
  • 1 cup fresh or frozen mango
  • 1/4 cup filtered water
  • 1 cup crushed ice
  • Pineapple wedges for garnish

  • Add all ingredients to a blender
  • Blend until smooth consistency
  • Poor into glasses
  • Garnish with pineapple wedges
  • Serve & enjoy!

We hope you enjoyed these recipes and feel inspired to sip your way through the summer on these refreshments!

Golden Oldies: John Legend

John Legend needs little introduction so I’ll keep this short and just list his career achievements in bullet points.

  • 10 Grammy Awards
  • 1 Golden Globe
  • 1 Academy Award
  • Sung with/for Kanye West, Jay Z, Alicia Keys, Britney Spears, Lauryn Hill, and more
  • Reached Billboard 100 #1 with single All Of Me
  • Married to swimsuit model Chrissy Teigen
  • Super into charity

I could go on, but the general idea is that he is an amazing, successful, talented human being, and we should all listen to more John Legend. Especially before, during, and after sex.

Save Room

OK, fine. This isn’t really an unknown song, and I’m a little biased because this is one of my favourite songs ever and has been since I was a kid. The opening baseline gets my feet tapping every time and the crisp organ is groovy as hell. This song makes me wish I was Chrissy Teigen, so I could spend my life being serenaded by John Legend.

Let’s Get Lifted Again

Most casual John Legend fans know the song Let’s Get Lifted, but this deep cut is also essential. Short, sweet, and sexy. You can barely hear what John Legend is saying under the slow funk guitar riff, but it doesn’t matter. His perfect falsetto is breathy and his voice goes on these high wandering notes as he croons, “So much, so much I want to show you.”

This Time

Another track off Legend’s legendary album Evolver. The lyrics are bittersweet and melancholy as Legend asks for a second chance in a relationship he messed up. Stuff about wasting love and taking a chance. It’s a bit sappy, but anyone who’s ever been too afraid to commit to a relationship fully will relate to the song. With swelling violin in the background and John Legend’s voice at the forefront, this is one of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard.

10 Summer Must Haves

#1 Floppy Sun Hat

Whether you’re sitting by the pool, going shopping or going to the beach, this wide-brimmed hat is the perfect vacation companion. It’s great for when you want to catch some rays but you don’t want to walk away with a completely burnt face.

#2 Bralettes

#3 Foundation with SPF

Everyone loves to look good in the summer, but it can be really irritating to have to put sunscreen on your face when you also want to wear some makeup, so that’s why this item is a must have! A good foundation with SPF allows you to not have to drown your face in sunscreen because it’ll offer all the protection you need. Some good ones are: CoverGirl Outlast Stay Fabulous 3-in-1 Foundation SPF 20, Maybelline Fit Me Foundation SPF 18, and Physicians Formula Youthful Wear Spotless Foundation SPF 15.

#6 Beach Read

The Decent Proposal by Kemper Donovan: This book follows two L.A. strangers who couldn’t be more different- he, a boyishly charming movie director whose self-confidence maddeningly defies his actual achievements; she, a ruthless corporate lawyer singularly focused on making partner. They receive an anonymous proposal inviting them to go on a date one night per week for a year in exchange for a $1 million reward. (18$)

4. Patch, Penny & Griffin

Yes, we know we named three but we couldn’t resist. Sophia Bush is the rescue Queen. Her first rescue was Jake when she was only 6 years old. Now she has three pit bull mixes: Patch, her soulmate. Penny, who looks like Rosie, the other rescue she grew up with. And Griffin, who has a heart-shaped spot on his belly.

3. Papi

Golden Oldies: Will Smith

In west Philadelphia born and raised
On the playground was where I spent most of my days
Chillin’ out maxin’ relaxin’ all cool
And all shooting some b-ball outside of the school
When a couple of guys who were up to no good
Started making trouble in my neighborhood
I got in one little fight and my mom got scared
She said ‘You’re movin’ with your auntie and uncle in Bel-Air’
And so a legend was born. Will Smith is one of the greatest gifts humanity has ever received. In 2007, Newsweek called him the most powerful actor in Hollywood. He’s tailed off a little this decade, but his children Willow and Jaden have carried on his legacy nicely. The thing that makes him so great is that nobody doesn’t like Will Smith. Some people don’t love his movies, or never really got into Fresh Prince, or don’t like rap. But you can’t not at least like Will Smith. Here is proof, from his Wikipedia page: “He is the only actor to have eight consecutive films gross over $100 million in the domestic box office, eleven consecutive films gross over $150 million internationally, and eight consecutive films in which he starred open at the number one spot in the domestic box office tally.”

Just The Two Of Us

Watch the music video and tell me you don’t want Will Smith to be your father. Will and Jada Pinkett Smith are probably the best Hollywood couple, and they’ve raised two strong kids who aren’t afraid to express themselves and step out from their parents’ shadows. This heart melting song has a great jazzy/bassy backing track and Will Smith raps clearly as if he’s making sure even a five year old kid could understand the lyrics. There’s advice on how to treat women and other people; chivalry; love; heartbreak; pretty much everything.

Get Jiggy With It

From his debut album Big Willie Style, this song is pure nostalgia. The iconic “na na na” sample in the back, the ’90s flow, the collab with DJ Jazzy Jeff. It’s like being transported to the vapourwave-y early ’90s. It’s refreshing to hear Will Smith today because he’s a rapper who didn’t have to swear/brag/be sexist to find success. His songs are upbeat and poppy and sometimes funny, and that’s what good rap should be.

Is Will Smith low-key the most family-friendly artist of all-time? Look at this music video! Kids hugging and blowing bubbles, Smith cooking up meat on the grill and popping in a CD, old ladies clapping on chairs. Obama should make a law that all copies of The New Kids On The Block’s “Summertime” should be destroyed and replaced with Will Smith’s “Summertime”. Maybe that would get him re-elected for a third term. Here are some key GIFs from the music video. Now go watch an episode of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air!

7 Extreme Summer Inspired Activities to add to your Bucket List

1. Scuba diving in Hawaii

Hawaii’s tropical climate makes it a fine place to visit anytime of the year. Not only does it have great weather, but it’s a huge marine reserve that was once considered the largest in the world (Australia now holds that title). Some of the marine animals to see include colourful tropical fish, giant sea turtles, sharks, stingrays, whales and many more. Lodge in the historic coastal town of Kailua Kona in order to be close to great diving spots.

Cost: Ranges between 250$ and 330$ per person/day

2. Bungee Jumping in China

Among extreme sports, bungee jumping is the great equalizer. You don’t need any special skills, just courage. And whether it’s your first jump or your twentieth, the experience will be just as thrilling.

Since opening in late 2001, China’s multipurpose, futuristic Macau Tower has been among its great landmarks. This skyscraper includes restaurants, shops, and theatres. The highlight of your stay, however, is likely to be your 764-foot dive off the side of the building.

Cost: About 650$

3. White Water Rafting In Colorado

The Colorado River, which winds for 226 miles through Colorado, Utah and Arizona, is the quintessential rafting destination. When you aren’t battling the powerful rapids, the calm stretches provide a unique view of the canyon. The journey also offers plenty of adventure on dry land with ancient Indian ruins, miles of hiking trails and campsites located on beautiful beaches.

Cost: 6 day trip, 2145$ per person

4. Zip lining in Alaska

Icy straight-point in Hoonah, Alaska is a common stop for cruise shops touring the region. They claim the zip line, the ZipRider, is the largest in the world, and it’s definitely a formidable ride, running more than a mile, with a 1,300 foot vertical drop over a 90-second ride. Six riders take off simultaneously on parallel lines, and race to the bottom.  Built in 2006-2007, the zip line offers an average speed of 60 mph, though the record is 82. Like all great zip lines, it features a fantastic view. Riders fly over Hoonah’s tree-covered mountains and the ocean below.

Cost: 140$ per person

5. Volcano climbing in Ecuador

Ecuador is home to Pichincha, Riminahui, Cotopaxi and Chimborazo volcanoes, and of these, Cotopaxi is perhaps the most emblematic and the most frequently climbed, though is does require an overnight at a refuge. At 19,347 feet, it is the second highest volcano in Ecuador. From Quito, you can hire a guide, though since the starting point of the hike is at nearly 15,000 feet, a number of days’ acclimation in Quito beforehand, as well as climbing some smaller, nearby mountains would be wise.

Cost: 2370$ for a 10 day experience

6. Skydiving in Dubai

Skydiving is a three-in-one experience. You get to fly on a jet plane, jump off the plane, then parachute your way down to land. It’s the perfect experience for anyone who just wants to let go.

Dubai is quickly becoming one of the best skydiving destinations in the world. On your descent you will be able to see a man made peninsula floating on the water with its own private beach, the tallest building in the world and the World Islands archipelago. Once you’ve seen the views you can enjoy Dubai’s nightlife, or even try a quad ride in the desert.

Cost: 710$

7. Caving in South Africa

Caving sits at the fringes of the tourism industry. Bad-boy eco-tourists, hard-core adventurers, and fearless curiosity-seekers can be found exploring the cramped, lightless corners of the underground world.

Congo Caves, in the Western Cape region of South Africa, is one of the more accessible and impressive underground attractions on the continent. This subterranean destination features towering stalagmites that sit in large chambers.

Cost: 8$ for 60 minutes and 10$ for 90 minutes
